Why 16×20, and why not real logs

The size that two people can build, the "shed" trap, and how to get the log look for less.

  2. 2

    Permits, codes and land checks

The one phone call that can save the whole $25,000, and the 10 questions to ask.

  3. 3

    The cabin

The layout and full spec sheet, plus the three details that hold it all together.

  4. 4

  6. 6

    The build, phase by phase

Eight phases from string lines to the first fire, with Bob’s checks at every step.

  7. 7

20 mistakes that blow the budget

The ones you see in half the build videos out there, and how to dodge them.

Is it for you?

For people who'd rather build it than buy it

It's for you if…

  • You can swing a hammer and read a tape, and you'll learn the rest
  • You've got a buddy, a son or a neighbor to help lift walls
  • You want a hunting camp, a weekend place or a retirement cabin
  • You want real numbers before you commit real money

It's not for you if…

  • You want stamped engineering drawings (it tells you when to get them)
  • You're set on a stacked-log build (Chapter 1 explains why it's not a $25K job)
  • You need a full house with plumbing on day one

Questions

Before you buy

What exactly do I get?

A 35-page PDF, US Letter size, that you can read on your phone, tablet or computer, or print out for the job site. You download it right after checkout.

Are these engineered plans?

No. It’s a complete planning and building guide with a full spec sheet, budget and materials list. Your county decides what drawings it needs, and the guide tells you when to bring in an engineer, for example in heavy snow or high wind country.

Will $25,000 really work where I live?

The typical build comes to $24,000 and a lean build to about $16,650 in materials, at fall 2026 prices. Prices vary by region, so the guide includes a worksheet to price your own list, and a chapter on where to save.

Does it include plumbing or a bathroom?

The $25K cabin is a dry cabin: warm, tight and wired, without running water inside. The guide prices out the add-ons, from a composting toilet to a well and septic, so you can plan them.
